If you have read the first two parts of our aquarium maintenance and troubleshooting series let me first start off by saying thanks. If you haven’t and this is the first article you are reading let me tell you that you picked a good topic. I don’t know one saltwater aquarium owner that has not had to battle with nitrates at one point in an aquariums life span.
If you have a Fish only tank then you don’t really have to worry about nitrates as much as they don’t both fish in the same way they affect invertebrates and coral. You can safely have nitrate levels above 50ppm in a tank with only fish. If you have a cleanup crew or corals you really need to keep that number as close to 0ppm as you can. read more....

This weeks invert o’ the week is the turbo/astrea snail. I’m not really sure what they are called. I’ve seen them labeled turbo and astrea. Regardless, these critters kick algae butt. I bought 10 of them last night and put them in my tank.
The glass of my biocube always has a lot of algae on it around the sides and on the bottom of the tank. In about 3 hours these guys put a big dent in it. I cant wait to see what the glass looks like when i get home tonight. Maybe i wont have to scrape it everyday anymore.
These snails are great addition to any cleanup crew. If you have some blue leg hermits already, get a handful of these snails and watch them attack the algae.

This weeks invert o’ the week is the blueleg hermit crab. They are my favorite type of hermit crab. They are awesome algae eaters. When i first started up my tank it was loaded up with algae and these guys cleaned it up great. If you are just starting your cleanup crew or want to add a few more critters go for a handful of these guys.
